Trastevere to Gianicolo: San Pietro in Montorio, Bramante's Tempietto, Roma

There is a beautiful stepped ascent from Trastevere, a lively neighborhood across the Tiber from Rome, up to the Gianicolo, the high ridge on the west side of the city where one finds the best views over Rome. Old stone steps - some rough, some more polished - across the road, up through the piazza of San Pietro in Montorio, home of Bramante’s Tempietto, and you find a beautiful landing pad, about halfway up to the Gianicolo.

I made the ink drawing as an architectural history graduate student on fellowship from University of Virginia in 2012. I used watercolor to interpret and enliven the drawing during pandemic quarantine, Spring 2020.

I'm excited to bring nearly 100 of my architectural Travel Sketches, created in mostly Italy, but also Switzerland, France, Spain, Greece, Hungary and Czech Republic from 1998 - 2012, into a Collection: lines drawn on site now illuminated by watercolor. Together, they reveal my personal evolution in architectural travel sketching and offer a piece of travel art that can remind you of your own memories in place, invite you into these spaces with your own experiential vision.
