Mount LeConte, within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, is one of the highest peaks in the Appalachian Mountains. The Appalachians are an ancient range, worn by time and polished by history - known by explorers, homesteaders and seekers of refuge in nature.
The MOUNTAINS Collection, and this piece, is an exploration of brush + line, using the metaphorical form of MOUNTAIN to see how the marks of paintbrush and pen or pencil, with their contrasting textures, can work together to model the tactile surfaces of land.
Intentional fields of fine black ink lines portray the lay of the land in the distant mountain range. Wispy brush strokes and lines in earthy greens and browns spill out the valley in the foreground, imagining an in-between season, like spring or fall.
