Yosemite, Tunnel View 1

The icons of Yosemite National Park in California are on grand display from a point known as Tunnel View. El Capitan, the sheer cliff, rises to the left, the iconic Half Dome is centered between and beyond the massive slopes and the mountain that appears to birth Bridalveil Falls occupies the right half of the View.

The MOUNTAINS Collection, and this piece, is an exploration of brush + line, using the metaphorical form of MOUNTAIN to see how the marks of paintbrush and pen or pencil, with their contrasting textures, can work together.to model the tactile surfaces of land.

The majestic view calls for a rigorous exposition of brush and line - pulling out all the stops! Delicate black ink lines appear to crawl up the cliff of El Capitan, tracing every prominent fissure, accentuated by paint marks. The delicate lines trace the folds of Half Dome and its neighboring ridges in the background. The mountains enfolding Bridalveil Falls come to life in rich sepia and brown watercolors mingling with ink lines to convey the rugged texture of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The valley spills out in black/brown watercolor strokes, deep and wispy.
