It was one of the coldest winters on record in Prague and I sought refuge from the wind in this arcade, stuccoed in white. My hands felt frozen as I drew these lines, drawing what I perceived as I walked through the almost maze-like space. I love what the texture of watercolor adds now, 21 years later - the idea of shadows. The play of light and shadow in that arcade is stitched in my memory, but I couldn’t convey that aspect of the space at the time.
I made the ink drawings as an undergraduate architecture student on independent travel study abroad from the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech in 1998. I used watercolor to enliven and re-interpret the drawing here, in December 2022.
