BALTIMORE "The Block" Streetscape: PRINT

BALTIMORE, Maryland's "The Block."

Awesome early twentieth-century neo-classical Architecture up top, ummm....slightly skanky down below. Known in B'more as "The Block" this has been the historical heart of "BURLESK" in Baltimore. Once on the edge of town, The Block was quickly enveloped by the growing city. The historic Gayety Theater was built in 1906 and Baltimoreans were entertained here for decades with burlesque and vaudevillian acts. It's booming today - HUSTLER moved into the theatre in the 1990s - and The Block appears...lively. Yet, the street facades are tawdry, flat solid walls and cheap plastic awnings having replaced original fenestration.

Impressed with the architectural details and the historic reputation of The Block, I re-imagined each shopfront with the club's current name on the theme of 1930s Hollywood/burlesque/boardwalk/carnival midway.
